What to Expect During Your First Reiki Session

Trying something new can bring both excitement and uncertainty. If you have never experienced Reiki before, you may be wondering: What will happen? What will I feel? Do I need to do anything?

The good news is that your first Reiki session does not require you to know anything about energy healing. You do not need to meditate, prepare specially, or understand how Reiki works.

Your only job is to arrive, relax, and allow yourself to receive.

Before Your Session: A Conversation About You

Your Reiki experience will typically begin with a brief conversation. This is an opportunity for us to discuss what brought you to Reiki and what you hope to receive from your session.

Perhaps you are feeling stressed, emotionally overwhelmed, mentally exhausted, or simply curious about energy healing. You may have a specific intention for your session, or you may not know exactly what you need.

Either is perfectly okay.

This is also a good time to ask questions and share any preferences or boundaries. Your comfort and consent are important throughout the session.

Getting Comfortable

During a Reiki session, you will generally remain fully clothed. You may lie comfortably on a massage table, although accommodations can often be made if lying down is uncomfortable.

The goal is for you to feel safe, warm, supported, and relaxed.

You may want to remove your shoes and loosen anything that feels restrictive. Soft music may be playing in the background to help create a peaceful environment.

There is no need to hold a particular position or worry about "doing Reiki correctly." Simply get comfortable and allow yourself to rest.

What Happens During the Reiki Session?

Once you are comfortable, I will begin the Reiki session using gentle hand placements or holding my hands slightly above different areas of the body.

Depending on your comfort level and the type of session you have chosen, touch may be incorporated with your permission, or Reiki can be offered without physical contact.

You are always welcome to communicate if you become uncomfortable or would like something adjusted.

During the session, you may simply rest quietly. Some people choose to focus on their breathing, while others allow their thoughts to come and go naturally.

You do not have to clear your mind.

You do not have to meditate.

You do not have to make anything happen.

Simply allow yourself to receive the experience.

What Might You Feel?

Every Reiki experience is unique.

Some people report sensations such as:

  • Warmth or coolness

  • Tingling

  • Gentle pulsing or subtle movement sensations

  • A feeling of heaviness or lightness

  • Deep relaxation

  • Emotional release

  • A sense of peace or calm

  • Images, colors, memories, or thoughts

Others may feel very little physically and simply enjoy a period of quiet rest.

There is no right or wrong experience.

You do not need to feel a particular sensation for your session to be meaningful. Each person experiences relaxation and energy work differently.

What If I Fall Asleep?

That is completely okay!

Many people become deeply relaxed during a Reiki session, and some fall asleep. Your body may simply be taking advantage of an opportunity to rest.

You do not have to stay awake for the entire session.

Can I Talk During Reiki?

Yes. You are always welcome to speak if you need something or have a question.

Some clients prefer to remain quiet and fully relax, while others may occasionally share what they are experiencing. There is no requirement to remain completely silent.

This is your session, and your comfort matters.

What Happens After the Session?

At the end of your Reiki session, I will give you time to slowly return to full awareness and get comfortable before getting up.

We may then spend a few moments discussing your experience. You are welcome to share anything you noticed, felt, or would like to ask about.

Some people feel peaceful, relaxed, or refreshed afterward. Others may feel tired, emotional, or thoughtful. Your experience may be different from someone else's, and it may even differ from one session to the next.

After your session, it can be helpful to:

  • Drink water

  • Eat nourishing foods

  • Give yourself time to rest if needed

  • Spend some quiet time reflecting or journaling

  • Notice how you feel without putting pressure on yourself to interpret every sensation

Do I Need to Prepare for My First Reiki Session?

There is very little you need to do to prepare.

You may find it helpful to:

  • Wear comfortable clothing

  • Arrive a few minutes early

  • Avoid rushing directly from a stressful activity if possible

  • Come with an intention, if you have one

  • Keep an open and curious mind

But remember—you do not have to believe anything specific, and you do not need to know what you are supposed to experience.

Curiosity is enough.

Your Comfort Comes First

A Reiki session should be a respectful and supportive experience.

You always have the right to:

  • Ask questions

  • Set boundaries

  • Decline physical touch

  • Change positions

  • Ask for more or less conversation

  • End the session if you become uncomfortable

My goal is to create a calm, welcoming space where you can simply take a break from the demands of everyday life and focus on yourself.

Your First Reiki Session Is Simply the Beginning

You do not need to have everything figured out before your first session.

You don't need to understand energy.

You don't need to know what you are supposed to feel.

You don't need to arrive with the perfect intention.

You simply need to permit yourself to pause.

At PowerCore Wellness, I am honored to provide a peaceful space for you to explore Reiki and other complementary wellness practices. Whether this is your very first experience with energy healing or you are continuing a journey you began long ago, you are welcome here.

Come as you are. Rest. Relax. Receive.

Your journey is unique, and your first Reiki session is simply an opportunity to discover what the experience means for you.

Reiki is a complementary wellness practice and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. It should not replace appropriate medical or mental-health care.
